The Village of Hamersville has dedicated its Emergency Services Building that houses the village’s police department in honor of former police chief James “Jim” Canter.

A dedication ceremony was held on the evening of Monday, March 20 with a crowd gathering in front of the Emergency Services Building located at the intersection of Bank Street and State Route 125 (Main Street).

After serving with the Hamersville Police Department for 37 years, Canter retired as the village’s police chief at the end of 2013, according to information provided by The Clermont Sun.

Speaking during Monday’s ceremony were Hamersville Mayor Wayne Hill and current Hamersville Police Chief Guy Sutton.

“We wanted to dedicate something in the memory of Jim Canter,” Hill said during Monday’s dedication ceremony. “Jim Canter, as far as we can tell, started back with the Hamersville Police Department in the early 1970s.”

“He was dedicated to Hamersville,” Hill said of Canter. “He spent his entire career with Hamersville.”

Canter passed away last year, according to Hill.

“That’s why we decided to dedicate this building to him, so this will now be known as The Canter Building,” said Hill.

Sutton felt that dedicating The Canter Building in memory of the former police chief will help his legacy live on in the Hamersville community.

“Maybe some kids will ask, maybe some parents will tell, and his legacy will go on for generations,” Sutton said during the dedication of The Canter Building, which also has a new marker at the entrance that was unveiled during Monday’s ceremony.
