Sardinia resident Tina Townes is a member of the Village Planning Commission and is also the Village Event Coordinator.
She spoke briefly to members of the Sardinia Village Council Feb. 12 about upcoming events for the village.
Townes has organized a list of upcoming events to promote interest in the village.
“I hope to find ways and events that will help bring Sardinia back to the way it used to be,” she told Council. “We’re not going to try and have a Founders Day Celebration this year, but I am very excited about other upcoming events.”
Townes passed out a paper with a list of events that are already scheduled, and others that are in the planning phase. Included on the list was;
• Easter Egg Hunt set for March 24 from 2to 4 p.m. at the Veteran’s Park
• Memorial Day Parade
• July 4th, Veterans Park with the American Legion
• Car Show set for August 25
• Veterans Park for a Remembrance of 911
• Halloween Kids, Small Carnival at the Firehouse on Oct. 27
• Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting set for Dec. 8
Sardinia Fiscal Officer Karen Miller said that Townes is working very hard for the village and asked for council’s approval to move forward on her event calendar. She was encouraged to do so by council.
Miller added that Townes would be forming a committee of volunteers to help the events be successful; she is also in the process of making the group a 401 nonprofit, so that donations can be tax deductible.
In other business at the meeting, Mayor Greg Cassidy briefly talked about an upcoming Chili/Spaghetti Dinner planned for Saturday, March 10 to promote the newly organized Eastern Joint Fire/EMS District.
The Fire District plans on placing a 3 mill levy on the May ballot to help get the word out about all the benefits a fire district will offer to residents.
The Chili/Spaghetti Dinner will also include a baked good auction and will begin at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend.
Council also took the following actions:
• Had the first reading of a fire code for the village which will allow for fire inspections in the village for new business.
Fire Chief Tommy Kirker is currently fire inspector and others will be trained to do the job.
• Passed a resolution to adopt a Brown County All-Hazard mitigation plan
• The next Fire District Meeting is an open to the public meeting set for March 15 at the Life Squad building at 7p.m.
• Fire contracts were signed with Franklin, Washington, Eagle, and Clay Townships.
• An ordinance was adopted for the 2018 final appropriations
• Adopted the pay rates for employees
• Set dates for Village wide spring yard sale for May 4, 5 and 6 and Aug. 31, Sept. 1, 2 and 3
• Shared information of purchasing new decorative solar light poles at the town square.
