Gerald (Jerry) Sanders, 87, died August 27 of an aggressive Lymphoma. Preceded by his parents, Mary Jane (Novak) and George E Sanders, son Jeremy Sanders, brother Ervin Sanders, sisters Bernadette Wilson and Janet Gancher, nephews Mark Wilson, Jeffery Sanders
Survived by Nancy, wife of 60 years, sons Greg (Julie), Joe (Korapin) and daughter Jennifer (Charles) Farah. Super grandchildren Greg (Anna) Sanders, Mia and Max Farah, Daphne, Daniel, and Dennis Sanders
Jerry loved to tell and retell stories of his happy childhood in Youngstown, Ohio. He attended school at Immaculate Conception and Ursuline High School. After graduating from the Athenaeum of Ohio in theology, Jerry enlisted in the US Army and attended their Language School in California. He spent the remainder of his 3 years of service stationed in Germany.
Jerry had a successful career as an executive with the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years. He served the Ohio councils of Brown County, Cincinnati and Scioto County, finishing his career in Chicago. He chose scouting because he believed it made a difference in the lives of youth it served. After retiring, he was a substitute teacher in Brown County, Ohio for 14 years which never felt like work to him.
Jerry was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 0320. Kiwanis International, and was a lector and led the rosary at church. He and Nancy traveled extensively both near and far. He visited every major league baseball stadium and state capitol often taking a grandchild along for the adventure. He died a long suffering Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on September 27th at Noon, St George’s Church in Georgetown, Ohio with a luncheon to follow. Donations in his memory can be made to the All Saints Assembly K of C , 7220 West Henry Rd, Ripley, OH 45167 or at the very least choose to forgive someone as Jerry could never hold a grudge.
