The Brown County Commissioners recently designated August 8 as “Thomas Lyon Hamer Day” in Brown County.
The proclamation signed by the commissioners read as follows;
“Whereas the year 2018 is the two hundredth anniversary of Brown County, Ohio it is a fitting time to recognize Thomas Lyon Hamer a once famous Brown Countian who was a United States Democratic Congressman and soldier; and whereas Thomas Lyon Hamer practiced law in Georgetown, Ohio and was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1825; and whereas the body unanimously chose him to be thier speaker on December 1829; and whereas when the Mexican-American War broke out Hamer volunteered as a Private in the Ohio Volunteers and was quickly appointed a Brigadier General on July 1, 1846; and whereas Thomas Lyon Hamer died unexpectedly while serving in the United States Army on December 2, 1846; therefore let us honor and remember Thomas Lyon Hamer as a hometown hero who is buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery at the Brown County Ohio Fairgrounds a few miles from his namesake village of Hamersville. We, the County Commissioners of Brown County, Ohio do hereby officially proclaim August 8, 2018 as Thomas Lyon Hamer Day.”
