After several years of trying to give back, it was time to get back.
To my roots.
A lifetime ago, it seems, I was a sportswriter. I started by covering high schools, then moved on to colleges, then to the pros. And while that was a dream, to get to the big leagues as a sportswriter, there is something about being a part of the high school sports experience that never leaves you.
Actually, for me, that’s true of the entire newspaper experience. I found that out in recent years, when I left full-time journalism to work with young adults with learning disabilities, helping them to transition from high school to the workplace. It was extremely rewarding work. But it wasn’t my work.
So when the opportunity arose to return to newspapers and to cover high school sports – coming full circle, I suppose – I took it. On Monday, Feb. 20, I started as the sports editor of The Clermont Sun, where I’ll mostly be immersed in high school sports in Clermont and Brown counties. I’ll be jumping right in, covering boys and girls basketball games this week as the postseason schedule rolls on, following local teams as far as they might go this winter season before jumping into the spring sports mix soon after.
I’ve worked as a journalist at newspapers and magazines across the country, from my native Minnesota to Colorado to a lot of places in between and, for nearly four years now, have called Ohio home. I’m still fairly new to Clermont County – I moved with my wife (a Loveland native) to Clermont County going on two years ago. So I know something about the sports vibe in this area and look forward to becoming a regular at area games.
If you’d like to reach out about anything relating to sports in Clermont and Brown counties, email me at bpeterson@clermontsun.com or call 513-732-2511 (ext. 1112).
I look forward to again being a part of the excitement that is high school sports.
It’s good to be back.
